Frankincense is known as the “king of essential oils” for good reason. Rich in history and aroma, Frankincense and Sacred Frankincense have stood the test of time and remain two of the most popular essential oils. Learn the tale of two Frankincenses – from their ancient roots to their special place in homes around the world today.
Where it all began
Our tale begins with the Boswellia tree. Scattered across the limestone cliffs of Oman or the rocky plains of Somalia, you’ll find this ancient, Frankincense-giving tree. Sacred Frankincense essential oil is derived from the sap of the Boswellia sacra in Oman and Frankincense essential oil comes from the Boswellia frereana in Somalia—both trees spindly, whimsical and wild.
Both varieties of Boswellia trees grow with little to no soil, bloom with white or pale rose-coloured flowers and have bark that feels like the pages of a book. These trees adapt to thrive on steep slopes and ravines where they produce gum resin for harvesting.
From roots to riches
Like all good things, the creation of gum resin takes time. Once the bark has been gently cut back to let the sap exude and harden (a 2-3 month process), the sap is harvested and prepared for steam distillation. Today we treasure the essential oils that are produced from the resin but in ancient times, the resin was burned to purify the air and was given as a precious gift. It’s no wonder that Frankincense is a derivative of the French words “franc” and “encens”, which translates to “high-quality incense.”
Frankincense has roots that run deep in spiritual practices. Frankincense was used by Hebrews and Christians nearly 2,000 years ago in religious ceremonies, which made the demand for Frankincense so high that it quickly become one of the most sought-after trade items in the world.
With this high demand and popularity, Frankincense found a place in homes around the globe. Coveted by traders and travellers, royals and rulers, this precious commodity made its way from place to place by sea and caravan. Its one-of-a-kind aroma only adds to its popularity. Honeyed, rich and balsamic, Frankincense will have you swept away to serenity in no time. Combine with Bergamot and Ylang Ylang for a distinctive, sweet, grounding aroma.

More valuable than gold
As Frankincense travelled the globe, word spread of its adaptability and powerhouse properties. Tales of the power of Frankincense spread so far and wide that legend says planting the Boswellia tree could ensure protection from dragons. While dragons are a thing of fairytales, it’s no fable to say that Frankincense was considered more valuable than gold.
A timeless gift
Some good things don’t come to an end. After thousands of years, Frankincense is still a household name today. Why? The uplifting and grounding essential oils that are derived from this ancient resin.
The differences between Frankincense and Sacred Frankincense lie in their aromas and the location and type of trees
from which they’re harvested. Frankincense is beloved for its musky, earthy aroma and skin-beautifying benefits.
Frankincense is derived from the Boswellia frereana in Somalia and Yemen and is distilled from the first sap harvested
from the tree.
Sacred Frankincense has a sweeter aroma than Frankincense and is derived from the Boswellia sacra, which is only found
in Oman. Unlike Frankincense, Sacred Frankincense comes from the second round of sap produced by the tree. This makes Sacred Frankincense the purest form of Frankincense. Sacred Frankincense is a Natural Health Product (NHP) treasured
for its ability to inspire relaxation, soothe symptoms of cough and cold and relieve minor skin irritations.
A small but mighty duo, Frankincense and Sacred Frankincense essential oils have stood the test of history and time to
become a staple in your home.

When congested, I rub some in my hands and cover my nose and inhale. It relieves my congestion and relaxes me. ❤️
I also mix it with lavender in my diffuser.
That’s a great tip Lorraine – thanks for sharing! 🙂
