Between a busy lifestyle and the quick availability of sweet and fizzy beverage options, getting enough water each day isn’t always easy; but it is important.
Experts in fields from beauty to medicine agree that hydration’s role in proper physical function cannot be overstated. According to the Mayo Clinic, your daily activities, such as breathing and sweating, deplete your hydration, making a fluid intake of 13 cups for men and 9 cups for women crucial—more if you are exercising or live in a hot climate.
Not in the habit of drinking enough? With a custom glass water bottle and your favorite sweet essential oils, you’ll love meeting your daily goal! Check out our fun, easy DIY instructions below for etching a personalized design on your water bottle. Almost all of the necessary supplies should be available at your local crafts store.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
- Glass water bottle: Do not use plastic, as some essential oils may erode the material
- Adhesive stencils: Find alphabet and decorative designs at craft stores or create your own design using clear laminate paper and a trimming knife or vinyl cutter.
- Painter’s tape
- Glass etching cream
- Paintbrush
- Cotton balls
- Rubber gloves
- Rubbing alcohol
Step 2: Etch Your Water Bottle
- Work in a well-ventilated area and wear an old, long-sleeved shirt and rubber gloves.
- Wash and dry your water bottle; then wipe it thoroughly with rubbing alcohol.
- Carefully place your adhesive stencil designs, making sure to smooth out any air pockets.
- If desired, use painter’s tape to line the edges of your stencil and cover any areas you don’t want frosted.
- Shake the etching cream to combine contents and pour some onto a disposable plate.
- Wearing gloves and using your brush or sponge, apply a smooth, thick layer of etching cream to the stenciled area.
- Let sit for 5–15 minutes, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Rinse off the etching cream with water in a stainless steel sink, using the brush to remove excess etching cream. Be sure not to use a porcelain sink.
- Remove stencils and dry with a cotton ball. Wash the bottle with soap and water before use.

I have a lady that puts two drops of peppermint vitality in her frozen blended coffee drink that she buys from a chain store every morning.. those cups are paper with that waxy coating. Is this ok? I know the Citrus oils are generally more caustic to plastics, but what about these types of cups and what about peppermint? Also, what’s the best way to explain why no EOs and plastic when drinking? I know it makes people nervous to hear they can break down plastic, but you can drink them, even though I KNOW they’re safe and have been drinking YL Oils for years.. Telling them to make sure it’s YL oil only isn’t explanation enough.. they still want to know how it’s safe for their stomachs to handle when a YL oil can dissolve a styrofoam or plastic..
Hi Nick, Great question. Using essential oils and essential oil products safely in conjunction with plastic containers depends highly on the type of plastic, the concentration of essential oils, and the amount of time the oils are stored in the container or the amount of time the essential oils come in contact with the plastic parts. Many essential oils are incompatible with plastic material, however using PETE or PP plastic can help.
Only pure essential oils, proven safe and labeled as dietary supplements, should be used internally. Follow the recommended dosage on individual product labels to ensure safety or seek the advice of a health professional before administering oils internally. If usage directions and safety guidelines are followed there should be no adverse effects from taking essential oils internally. Thanks for stopping by with your question!
hi just wondering if stainless steel bottle as good as glass bottle for adding diluted essential oil?
Hi Rainbow Yuen, Great question. Stainless steel bottles can be used with diluted essential oils if you don’t have a glass bottle available! Thanks for stopping by!
Do you know of any hydration water bladder for hiking that i can put essential oils in?
I have so many people (one was an aromotherapist) telling me not to use the EO’s internally. I was really enjoying adding peppermint to one bottle of water and then lemon to the next. Please tell me they are okay to drink in my water.
Hi Kathy, Great question! Only pure essential oils, proven safe and labeled as dietary supplements, should be used internally. Follow the recommended dosage on individual product labels to ensure safety or seek the advice of a health professional before administering oils internally. Are all Young Living Vitality Essential Oils safe for consuming? How does it differ from the regular essential oils?
This will be my first time trying essential oil in my water. So i just want to be extra sure.
I was thinking of ordering the Spearmint Vitality. Does is matter how many drops i use if it is safe to consume on a daily basis?
Thanks
Hi Jenn, thank you for your question. With the same constituents and purity, our Vitality line is labeled for dietary use, while the topical/aromatic line is labeled for topical and aromatic uses. We recommend referring to the product label for usage directions. Thanks for stopping by!
The issue of consuming essential oils in our drinking water came up recently in a young mom’s group. It is not exclusively for YL members, so one of the young moms took exception to our consuming oils in water. We tried to explain about the Vitality oils but she was not convinced and thought we were going to cause damage to people. What could we have said to her and so others in the group could understand and not be fearful? The Vitality oil bottles do not say they can be consumed in water. There is not much room on the label so all that is stated under directions when you peel back the label is to put a few drops into a capsule. No mention of adding to your water glass. The front does say “essential oil supplement”. We are looking for something definitive on the website as to why we YL members drink oil in water. Thanks.
Hello Sheila, Our Claims Committee reviews all current scientific research to determine the label for each product. Federal regulations require sufficient scientific evidence to support the label of the product. This means that any Young Living® product will require sufficient evidence to determine usage and following the usage directions will help ensure the safety and efficacy of the product.
I’m wanting to make foaming hand soap using Essential oils, but I’m concerned about the plastic tubing used for the pumps. Is there a pump that can be used safely with EO?
Hi Kenett, Using essential oils and essential oil products safely in conjunction with plastic depends highly on the type of plastic, the concentration of essential oils, and the amount of time the oils are stored in the container or the amount of time the essential oils come in contact with the plastic parts. Many essential oils are incompatible with plastic material, however using PETE or PP plastic can help. Thanks for stopping by with your question!
I love putting lemon oil, tangerine, lime really any citrus in my water in the morning but recently looked at my lemon bottle and it read that you aren’t suppose to ingest it. Is this true??
Hi Amy, The new Vitality line is intended to allow members to differentiate between those oils for dietary use and those for topical/aromatic use. We would recommend using Lemon Vitality, Tangerine Vitality and/or Lime Vitality in your drinking water and using Lemon, Tangerine and/or Lime essential oils for aromatic and topical uses only. Always refer to the product labels for proper usage instructions. Thanks for stopping by with your question!
I am having a debate about our EOs with plastic. Which oils break down plastic? I’ve been told ONLY citrus oils. Is this true?
HI Kathy, It is advised that members store essential oils in their original containers. However, if you decide to mix oils or store them in different containers, we recommend using dark colored glass. We do not recommend storing undiluted essential oils in plastic containers. Many essential oils are incompatible with plastic material. Using a PETE or PP plastic bottle can help, but we recommend switching to glass or stainless steel if you would like to use the same bottle for extended periods of time.
Is there a trick to keep the oil from floating to the top when the oil and water separate, or is it just something we kind of deal with?
Hi Stephanie, We’d recommend shaking your water bottle with the water and vitality oil before drinking to better mix the oil and water together. Thanks for stopping by with your question!
I put ice in my water and then I add 2 or three drops of my vitality oil and the vitality oil will stick to the ice and it slowly gives out the flavor of the oil as I drink the water.
Ditto what Diann Walley said. I love the ice tip.
I bought the Ningxia organic dried wolfberries and would like to make tea. Does anyone have the recipe on the amount and the procedure to use?
I use Tangerine oil with fresh ginger root.
How much ginger root do you use Pamela?
Can you mix EOs with fractionated coconut oil before putting it in water to help it mix better?
Hi Sarah, Mixing the oils with fractionated coconut oil will not help them mix better with water as coconut oil is not water soluble. We hope this information is helpful!
Adding a pinch of sea salt will help the oil “go into” the water
I am pregnant and I have been drinking lemon essential oil in my water occasionally. I recently heard that injesting EO is unsafe because of the potency and water/oil is unable to mix. Even though I’ve only had it once or twice, it makes me nervous that I have exposed my baby to the oil. Is there any way this is dangerous to her? I will not be drinking it again while pregnant.
Hi Meredith, Some women have safely used essential oils in this manner while pregnant. If you are concerned, we would suggest speaking with a health care advisor who is experienced in EO usage.
Lot’s of great ideas, I enjoyed reading all the comments. I have used peppermint vitality, orange vitality, lemon vitality and grapefruit vitality in my water. You could use a different vitality oil every day to keep your taste-buds from getting bored.
This helps me increase my water intake more than anything. I may consider customizing the container with an etching though. “Grannie’s Jar” seems fairly appropriate. I know it was a canning jar and also a container for her tea with overdose amounts of sugar. The jar is about two quart size and is very old…… When she stirred her tea, it looked like a mini-blizzard. Every day I use it, of course, I have sweet memories of her. I love all of the essential oils that are recommended for infusing water. Will be etching as soon as I can.
I have a Lifefactory glass bottle with a silicone straw, I had an issue with the straw stretching, wrote to the company and asked what was going on, they informed me that using EO’s in the bottle can cause this as the compounds the straw is made of is changed with the oils, they said to wash the bottle and straw with dish soap and let it dry it will then go to its normal size, until you use it again with the oils, this is also true of the sealing gasket, just wanted to share.
I thought about using glass mason jars to drink out of. I know you can buy them with handles and they now sell lids that fit both regular jars and the ones with handles. All you’d need after that would be the stainless steel straws. Im going online to see about ordering the straws. Happy oiling everyone!!
I use mason jars to drink my EO water when I’m at home. It works perfect.
How do you mix oil and water? Are you mixing in something before you put it in water?
Hi Leslie! To infuse water with essential oils, simply add 1-2 drops of oil to the water. The oil and water will not ‘mix’; however, you can help ensure you are receiving oils with each swallow by shaking the bottle frequently.
I drink out of a Camelbak stainless steel water bottle that includes a plastic straw. Would the oil cause a problem with the plastic straw?
Hi Penny! Using essential oils and essential oil products safely in conjunction with plastic depends highly on the type of plastic, the concentration of essential oils, and the amount of time the oils are stored in the container or the amount of time the essential oils come in contact with the plastic parts. Many essential oils are incompatible with plastic material. Using PETE or PP plastic can help, but we recommend switching to solely glass or stainless steel if you would like to use the same bottle for extended periods of time. We hope this helps!
Penny, you can get stainless steel straws at Bed Bath & Beyond. They might have to order them for you, but it is free shipping to your house. I got 4 straws and a cleaner brush. Hope this helps you.
I started using a stainless steel cup from Starbucks that a super nice lady sent me (Debbie H.). It has a lid and a ss straw too!
When we have a gathering I use a large glass pitcher filled with water , cut fresh lemons, fresh mint and add lemon and peppermint oils to taste. Makes a beautiful and inviting display that is refreshing and inviting to your guests.
I’m from Canada, I’ve looked everywhere for glass bottles,,,, over 20$ in amazon and also shipping is very high!! Any ideas anyone?
I use the Voss water bottles available from W.mart.
I should add that they are found with the bottled water… and have water already in them. I just reuse mine
That is exactly what I do too! Also when I manage to brake one I am not too upset either because I only paid $2
I am so glad to hear that they can be found in Walmart. I know what project I will be starting on my vacation.
Target has several
Check out HomeGoods and TJ Maxx! I just purchased 2 glass water bottles for $6.99 each! Awesome deal!
I have found some great water bottles at Winners for only $6-8!
Great Idea!
I love all the suggestions. Although I use several different ones, my favorite is Citrus Fresh. With summer upon us and gardens plentiful, I thought I would mention that I slice cucumbers in a pitcher of water, let it sit overnight in the refrigerator and use it to fill/refill my water bottle. My husband also likes to use watermelon and cantaloupe alone and in various combinations but I just like the cucumber. It is very lightly flavored and refreshing. I know this idea doesn’t include oils but it does changes things up a bit, get me to drink more water, and is a good, eye catching idea for when you need to make a large batch for a get together. Have a great day.
I have learn you need to drink half of your body weight in ounces. I have a few water infusers that I love. My faves are lemon with strawberry and hony and I love cilantro and lime. Essential oils I like peppermint and lemon together.
Can you put EO’s in HOT tea? I know you can’t put them in while you are cooking because it kills them.
Yes, you can put essential oils in hot tea. Heating essential oils may diminish their beneficial properties, but oils can also be used in recipes for flavor only.
I’ve been enjoying fresh cut or whole strawberries and a few drops of Lemon Essential oil!! So exciting to have my own “strawberry lemonade” water! Also love sliced cucumbers and lemon or grapefruit oil.
I use my old glass tea pot to add my oils in and I know it is safe be happy with your oils
Thank you.
i start out with water with the lemon oil every morning and the same throughout the day. Just got an order in today with orange going to mix those 2 & see how that is
For me, it’s lemongrass essential oil in water.
Wondering if you see any side benifit to drinking lemongrass water? I just ordered this to use topically for my dad for pain and wondered if drinking it would also help any more or differently thanks!
I believe I realized benefits from drinking lemongrass water, it is said to support connective tissue, circulatory systems…..I drink through a straw, as it is considered a “hot” oil and my lips were sensitive, but it may not affect others in same way.
i was at walmart and could not find these bottles. which area do i look?
i just got a bottle like this yesterday at Walmart. $3. I love this idea. Thanks for sharing.
I found them at our walmart for 2.74
I had been looking for a Voss glass bottle forever, till I finally found a 3.1oz glass Voss water at Sprouts. ☺
You can get voss in bulk from that new boxed app. They were on there yesterday :). Happy oiling!!
I just looked at the voss on boxed and they are plastic bottles, not glass :)
I have been putting 1 drop each of grapefruit, orange and lemongrass essential oils…it is a fresh wonderful way to drink water!!
I LOVE lemon. Love it in water, love it in tea… I’m going to try some more citrus-y flavors soon. Grapefruit it on my list of to-try flavors.
I LOVE grapefruit oil in my water! It makes my mouth tingle!
I am pretty sure you can get the water bottle for around 4 or 5 dollars. It looks like a Voss bottle. I just bought one at Walmart for this reason.
Since grapefruit is made from the peel, is it ok the drink if I am taking statins? Iow, since it is not juice, is it safe?
Thank you. ;)
Hi Jeri, thanks for dropping by! With any medical conditions, we recommend that you seek the advice and recommendation of a competent, trained health care provider with knowledge and experience with essential oils.
I adore these bottles.. Any clue where you get them?
walmart in the dairy beverage area
Love this idea! Sharing!!
I am going to add Jade Lemon to my next ER order, I haven’t tried it yet, but it sounds amazing!
I love my oil infused water, but wonder what container you take your citrus oils in so you can make more throughout the work day. I know with time the oils can eat through the plastic lid, so I do not want that to happen in my purse. If I keep filling the bottle I take, I’m afraid I’ll have a mess one day!
Hi Susan, we love our oil-infused water too! Try using a glass bottle – that will prevent the oils from eating away at plastic. Hope this helps!
Try using a Snapple bottle. They’re glass with a metal lid. Perfect for carrying in my bag! No need for a straw!
I bought a new glass water bottle at Target with a snap on lid that is leak proof. It works well in my purse and I put in my lemon oil every day.
What a great idea! I love anything crafty and DIY (and glass!).
So many great glass bottles can be reused and repurposed and turned beautiful. I think I will try this with a mason jar!
i was JUST planning to do this as a make&take for my first EO’s 101 class later this month!
I cut up fruits into water and don’t have to stress abt plastic bottles when on the move. I also use an old porcelain teapot and add my oils to water and drink from there.
This technique was one of the first art projects I did in 6th grade! Brings back great memories. FUN!
I would like to get started with your oils. I would like to order through Leah Sampson. Is there some kind of starter kit with a difusser?
Great! Yes, we have some starter kits that include a diffuser – take a look: https://www.youngliving.com/us/en/category/essential-oil-starter-kits
I love this. I’m going to give it a go at home!
I grow my own herbs/spices and as I pick them I freeze them in ice cube trays with water. During the summer I’ll grab a couple ice cubes with spearmint or peppermint leaves to add to my water. Refreshing and organic!
Love any of the citrus oils in water. I would try this project but it would never work out that good for me lol!
😀 I do this too!
LOOKING FOR SOME GREAT IDEAS
I LOVE using grapefruit in my water. It is refreshing AND the extra taste is something I crave, which makes me drink more water!
I love orange and cinnamon!
That sounds wonderful in tea too. But I am going to try that.
When you are using the oils in tea, do you have to have a glass or stainless steel cup or will ceramic, regular tea cup work?
Hey Tammy,
You shouldn’t have a problem using essential oils in ceramic/traditional tea-cups! Thanks for your question!
