Walk into any beauty store and you’ll find shelves stocked with hair products with overwhelming ingredients lists. But taking care of your hair doesn’t need to be complicated. In this blog, you will find out how to use essential oils to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy. You’ll also find tips on which essential oils are best for your hair, as well as some DIY recipes for different hair care needs.

Are essential oils good for your hair?

Essential oils have been used for cosmetic purposes for centuries. When it comes to hair, essential oils can be beneficial in promoting healthy looking hair without unnecessary harsh chemicals. They are known to help maintain the healthy appearance of damaged hair, whilst also being used in styling for taming and texture.

What are the best essential oils for your hair?

  • Lavender essential oil has a history of improving the appearance of hair. This sweet-scented oil deeply moisturises hair, giving you that sleek and glossy look.
  • Rosemary essential oil gets its name from the Latin ros marinus “dew of the sea”. It can be used to cleanse and condition a dry scalp whilst leaving hair smelling fresh and herbaceous.
  • Both Peppermint and Tea Tree essential oil have been used for centuries for their cleansing and clarifying properties. These oils are especially beneficial for those individuals with oily hair or product build-up who need a deep clean to get their natural shine back.
  • Ylang Ylang essential oil (pronounced eelang eelang) is the perfect choice for those left with lacklustre hair from years of heat styling. Steam distilled from the flowers of the Cananga trees, this exotic oil nourishes dull hair whilst leaving behind a delicate, floral scent.

Safety tip

Essential oils should never be applied to the scalp undiluted. Always mix with a carrier oil to avoid irritation to your scalp.

How to use essential oils in your hair care routine

Now we’ve covered which essential oils are loved by your locks, let’s get you familiar with some of the best ways to incorporate them into your hair care routine.

Levelling up your shampoo & conditioner

Simply add a drop or 2 of an essential oil (we recommend Lavender) to your favourite shampoo and conditioner for a boost of fragrance and hydration. This is a great place to start for those new to essential oils.

DIY hair oil

You will need:

  • 2-3 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil
  • 2 tablespoons carrier oil

Blend 2 to 3 drops of essential oil (give Ylang Ylang a try) with 2 tablespoons of carrier oil, like coconut, jojoba or vegetable oil, and mix well. Massage gently into your scalp, wrap your head in a towel or shower cap, and leave for 10 minutes before washing it out with shampoo for a deep-conditioning treatment. Apply twice a week to keep your hair looking healthy and glamorous. Feel free to switch up your essential oils to make this treatment fully customisable per your mood.

You can also make your own DIY hair spritz for a speedy surge of moisture.

DIY exfoliating scalp scrub

You will need:

  • 2 drops Tea tree essential oil
  • 2 tablespoons carrier oil
  • 2 tablespoons sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Product build-up getting you down? In a small bowl, combine 2 drops of Tea tree essential oil and 2 tablespoons of carrier oil with 2 tablespoons of sea salt and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Gently massage this exfoliating scrub into your scalp in circular motions. After 10 minutes, wash your hair as normal to see immediate results of healthier-looking hair.

DIY hair pomade

You will need:

  • 3 tablespoons shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets
  • 2 tablespoons jojoba oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3 drops Rosemary essential oil

Tame and texturise your hair with this natural and non-greasy recipe. Melt 3 tablespoons of shea butter and 2 tablespoons of beeswax pellets in a double boiler. In a separate bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of jojoba oil and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch. Pour the melted ingredients into your bowl and add 3 drops of Rosemary essential oil. Stir well and transfer to a glass jar. To use, rub a small amount of hair pomade on your fingertips and run them through your mane to tame unruly hair or add texture and definition to waves and curls.

For those trying to keep facial hair sleek and polished, you can also use essential oils in your beard-grooming routine.
