Be kind to your hard-working skin! This homemade body butter recipe will leave your skin moisturized and soft, thanks to rich cocoa butter and coconut oil. We love its whipped consistency that goes on smoothly and feels light to the touch.
Whipped Body Butter
Ingredients
- 1 cup organic coconut oil
- 1 cup organic solid cocoa butter (do not use lotion)
- 15 drops of your favorite topical/aromatic essential oil (we love Cedarwood, Lavender, and Frankincense essential oils)
Directions
- Warm a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat, then add coconut oil and cocoa butter. Melt until completely liquefied, about 4–5 minutes.
- Pour into a glass mixing bowl and place in refrigerator for 30–45 minutes to cool and just set but not harden.
- Stir in essential oils.
- Using an electric hand mixer, whip until firm peaks form, about 10 minutes.
- Gently transfer to a seal-able jar or container. Store at room temperature to avoid melting or solidifying.
- Massage into dry skin!
The lotion just smelled like the cocoa butter, I used 10 drops each of the oils. It doesn’t look creamy like the picture, it’s more solid. What did I do wrong? How can I fix it? So sad:(
Hello Elizabeth. Sorry that they didn’t turn out the way you wanted. You could try heating them over the stove again and adding more drops of essential oil to give them a more potent fragrance. Hope that helps and that this next trial run will be more effective. Thanks!
Did you figure it out, Elizabeth? I haven’t tried it yet so just wanted to know ….
I love whipped body butter and have made a few batches, and taught others to make it as well
My favourite oils to add to a batch, is always Frankincense, Myrhh and Lavender 5 drops each
I would love to win this amazing package, and will be watching to see who the winner is in November 2017
Question. Doesn’t heating the coconut oil destroy some of the key nutrients. I was told to always buy cold pressed coconut oil for that reason.
Hi Cheryl, The coconut oil must be melted in this recipe to ensure the ingredients are mixed and molded properly. The result of the recipe is a lotion bar that will moisturize and hydrate the skin. We are not able to guarantee results of modifications to this recipe. If you have further concerns regarding heating your coconut oil, we suggest contacting the coconut oil manufacturer for more information. Thanks for stopping by!
I would TOTALLY use Stress Away or Deep Relief in my body butter. A massage with that from your spouse would not be too shabby, either!
Hi 👋 I will be putting PEACE AND CARMING as I will smell gorgeous as well as living my day in peace and a charming state 💐
Would shea butter work in place of cocoa butter?
Hey Brandi. We have not tried replacing the shea butter with cocoa butter, but feel free to experiment and see how it turns out. It will probably just change the consistency of the body butter, but it will still have great ingredients to hydrate the skin. Let us know what you create and if you like the results. Hope that helps and thanks for stopping by!
Stress Away for sure!
I have been doing lots of DYI with my EO. Definitely going to try this one. Thank you so much for your wonderful oils.
You are so welcome Leta! Thanks for stopping by and let us know some of the favorite blends you use for this recipe. Have fun experimenting!
Hello everyone. I am totally new to essential oils. Could I use this on face as well or only on the body ?
Hello Erika. Welcome to the YL Family! Feel free to use it on your face, but it is meant to really hydrate, so if you like a lighter lotion on your face, I would just use it on your body. Experiment with it and let us know what you do. Thanks for stopping by!
This body butter is truly awesome and fun to make!!! I actually enjoy it with Lemon and Citrus Fresh for a great way to start my day!! For my evening lotion I use Lavender and Cedarwood!!!
About to make some gentle baby body butter for momma and babe! Maybe dad can borrow a touch?
I love to make the body butter with frankincense and sandalwood and use it twice a day as my face moisturizer!! It works a great and people love my aroma!
I’ll try Peace & Calming–it’s my favorite!
Love Stress Away in this butter!!! So natural and I receive complements each time a use it!!
Hi – is it possible to replace the coconut oil? If yes, what could I use? I don’t like the smell of cocount oil. Thanks
Hi Sam, Currently we have not tested this recipe without coconut oil. However you are more than welcome to try it with a similar vegetable derived oil. Let us know how it goes!
The ingriedents state 15 drops of essential oil, but if I chose 2-3 different oils would I put 15 drops of each one? Or 15 drops total?
That is probably a stupid question and I’m too blind and blonde to realize. Haha sorry in advance!
Haha Hey Lindsey! Good question! You would still do 15 drops in total (or more if you want a more potent body butter). For example you would use 5 drops of 3 different oils to amount to 15 drops to the mixture. Have fun experimenting with the different blends you want to create and let us know how it turns out. Hope that helps!
why does it seem my lotion is too oily? It melts on contact.
Hey Terri. It could be that the butter did not get cold enough before it was whipped. The body butter should easily melt though so that it can proper hydrate your skin. You might want to try chilling the mixture again and re-whipping it. Hope that helps!
Could you use African Shea bitter instead or cocoa butter?
Hi Misty, Thanks for stopping by! We feel that African Shea Butter would be a good replacement for the Cocoa Butter as it is also vegetable derived. Please let us know how it works for you!
Lavender, patchouli, mint and sweet orange takes me to my happy place.
I currently use Patchouli, Lavender and Lemongrass or Tea Tree with organic coconut oil, will definitely try with this recipe! Thanks, sounds amazing!
I’m having a difficult time getting mixture to whip into peaks..mixer was on hi for 10 min. & the consistency is is like cake batter. Any suggestions on how to thicken it up?
Thank you ;)
Hey Jackie. It sometimes helps to chill it because it can get hotter from the friction when it mixes. Hope that helps and it works!
My lotion does not stay creamy, I always have to heat it in the microwave to get it to where I can use it again. What am I doing wrong?
Hey Julie! Sorry that the lotion isn’t the consistency you want. It could be that when you first made the lotion it was not mixed long enough. Maybe try mixing it again in a bowl and see if that changes the texture. Not being there for the entire process it is hard to say. Hope that helps!
Great recipe. Thank you for sharing.
I add lots of jojoba oil to get it to a texture I like. For those not caring for the coconut odor, you could try fractionated coconut oil. I have used the cocoa butter versus shea butter. I like the smell of cocoa butter.
Don’t be afraid of the oily feel. We’ve been conditioned to think Oily = Greasy.
My 2 cents.
I make my body butter with coconut oil, cocoa butter and peppermint, for a revitalizing, energy boosting cream to start your day, or to refresh you after a hard day’s work.
I love purification mixed with lavender 💜! Simply amazing and people always comment on the scent!!
Awesome! I would try a citrus smell as well along with peppermint!
Will be making this this week, think I’ll try a little lemon EO
I am making this now and it won’t whip. I let it sit in the refrigerator for 45 minutes. Any ideas? Help!
Hey Tina! Sorry the body butter was not whipping how you wanted and that we didn’t get back to you right away. It could be that the butter wasn’t cool enough or that the mixer setting needed to be higher. Were you able to get it to the consistency that you wanted?
Body butter with panaway take the soreness away.
I think I will try Lavender, lemon and sweet orange. Can’t wait to try it!
I’ve made this with the same oils and I added in a few drops of Rose oil too! Love the scent and all these oils are great for your skin! I’m very stingy with my rose oil, so anything I put it in has to feel really luxurious, and this does! 🌹❤️
Cedarwood and orange
I love this natural products and DIY
Making this with valor and sacred Frank right now! Can’t wait!
I love making coconut oil and solid cocoa butter with peppermint, orange, rosewood and lavender for a relaxing nighttime lotion.
Idaho Balsam fir and lavender to match my favorite bath salts concoction! <3
I am going out now to buy coconut oil! Plan on making this this afternoon.
Ylang ylang and orange. Heaven!
I’d use Sandalwood, lavender, and orange. Can’t wait to use this recipe.
So easy and great for your skin!
This sounds wonderful. I have not had a chance to use the oils much so I’m going to try this one. Thanks.
I use Frankincense, lavender, and geranium in my body butter. I love the smell and it leaves my skin so soft.
I love tea tree, frankincense and lemon. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Makes my skin just feel and look amazing !
I plan on using that exact combo! Also another with grapefruit!
Excited to try this! Thanks for sharing.
I would try one of these: Rose, Gardenia or Almond essential oil.
This recipe is amazing
I love the lavander!! That will definitely go in mine.
I will make exactly that combination: Frankincense-love that on my skin! Cedarwood- it’s great with Frank, & Lavender-also great for skin, & balances out the woodsy aroma with a floral note!
Valor is my next butter.
That sounds wonderful. I’m not good at mixing scents so you think valor alone or with another oil and if so what? Sorry for long question, I just thought this was brilliant.
Love homemade body butter. Will try this recipe next.
My Sister and I are crafty witches lol however new to it all. I love this it is so simple yet rewarding , cannot wait to try this one !!
