Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with Young Living’s vice president of research and development, Dr. Cole Woolley, to learn more about our new Hong Kuai essential oil. With the highest sesquiterpene content of any Young Living essential oil, Hong Kuai is like inhaling liquid confidence. It also supports an increase in spiritual awareness and inspires clarity, intuition, and action. First introduced as part of our 2013 Exotic Oils Collection, Hong Kuai is now permanently available as a 5-ml single oil.
Hong Kuai (Chamaecyparis formosensis) is a treasured tree found high atop the steep mountain rainforests of Taiwan. Hong Kuai trees typically live 1,000–2,000 years, with every tree ring having its own deposit of that year’s essential oil. Hong Kuai’s lasting, sesquiterpene-rich, woody aroma makes it a sacred lumber for building temples and shrines; its name in Chinese means “the respected trees for the temple-building society.”
Everyday Uses
- Diffuse to create confidence and a positive emotional outlook.
- Put a drop in your sacred books, writings, or journal to promote inspiration.
- To boost confidence, inhale or apply topically to temples or heart before you meet with clients or host a sharing party.
- Add a drop to a handkerchief and inhale the scent during a stressful meeting.
- Add a drop to your wallet or purse to help boost confidence everywhere you go.
- Men: Mix 2 drops of Hong Kuai, 1 drop of Ylang Ylang, and 2 drops of Idaho Blue Spruce; use as a gentle, yet empowering, cologne for greater confidence and perseverance.
As always, we would love to hear from you. Leave a comment and tell us how you use Hong Kuai essential oil.

I know this was posted a long time ago but I was currenty looking to order this oil and can not find it on Young Living’s site, only in their book, but not online. Am I am not looking in the right area?
Hello! Hong Kuai is currently out of stock. We recommend checking Member News or the Out of Stock list for any updates regarding this product. At this time, we do not have an projected date of availability. Thank you for your patience and for stopping by!
i want to know more about the integrity of this product. I’ve just learned tat hong kuai is an endangered tree that lives 1000-2000 years. where is it harvested? and how old are the trees that young living uses? I’ve just ordered it and am now worried about the ecological footprint my order will leave.
Hi Jeany, Hong Kuai is sourced from Taiwan. Although it is illegal in Taiwan to cut down Hong Kuai trees, we are registered to collect already fallen logs for our Hong Kuai essential oil. Summer typhoon rains cause landslides in the mountains that carry Hong Kuai logs into streams and rivers. Only registered individuals and companies can collect the Hong Kuai logs. Thanks for stopping by with your questions.
A really great smell – like freshly cut grass
I have this oil but have not used it. I wonder if it is safe for pregnant women – would it be useful during labor?

So I just tried this oil! I immediately felt more alert and engaged with my surroundings after just a few minutes but I’m not sure if it is because of the very strong scent (reminded me of a goat barn yard) but what was crazy is even though it smelled terrible to me I had to keep smelling it! In this interesting oils defense, I was smelling it neat right out of the bottle, I have experienced diffusing sometimes changes the bite of an oil. Gonna try that!
It sounds like an interesting oil to try. I might have to put it on the list. I diffuse oil everyday at work and at home always looking for something different.
I love that Young Living continues to add wonderful new oils like Hong Kuai to our line!
oh!!! when will we be able to get this in Ecuador?
“Inhaling liquid confidence” love that!
“Inhaling liquid confidence. Love that.
I like the idea of dabbing it on a journal page. That is genius!
I would love to try it next time I order.
