Spring Break is full of photo opportunities! Times when you’ll head outdoors with your family and friends to celebrate the warming weather. Check out our top seven tips on how to capture the moment with the perfect selfie.
1. Prep Your Canvas
Before the cameras start flashing, start the day off right with the right beauty products! Use the ART® Skin Care System while getting ready to look your most radiant for all your outdoor activities and photos. Remember to add a bright lip color just before you get snapping.
2. Make Things Interesting
The best selfies offer something for the audience. Give your viewers something to look at or something to laugh about. Bring some personality to your photo, but make sure to keep it natural—avoid fake smiles and staged poses. A picture is worth a thousand words, so make them count!
3. Good Lighting is Your Best Friend
Lighting plays a key role in the outcome of a perfect photo, and selfies are no exception. Make sure to capture your selfie in well-lit areas with as much natural light as possible. Try to position yourself so that the light is in front of you to avoid shadows on the face.
4. Do a Quick Background Check
Great selfies often feature a great backdrop that gives your audience the inside scoop on where you are and what you’re doing. Your viewers would much rather see a pretty background or a neutral wall instead of a bathroom toilet or a room full of laundry.
5. Know Your Angles
It’s important to know your angles, because looking into a camera isn’t like looking into the mirror. Practice and play around with different poses to see what angles turn out to be most flattering to you. Try holding your device stretched away from your body, a little above eye level with your head slightly tilted to one side. That way your chin and cheekbone are visible, ensuring a slimming angle and a grade-A selfie.
6. Take Plenty of Photos and Pick a Winner
We all know that professional photographers take hundreds of photos only to narrow them down to a few golden shots, so why shouldn’t you? Just make sure you’ve got enough memory in your smartphone so you really get the one you want. Like other great photographers, remember to only share a few of your best shots—posting selfies sparingly will create the biggest impact.
7. Edit
The right photo-editing app can make a huge difference in how your final picture turns out. Don’t be afraid to apply a filter to your photo to make it more flattering! Instagram has the basics, but there are tons of other apps and tools out there that can help you get rid of the little blemish on your nose or even add a Cindy Crawford-esque mole.

Look natural and happy without being too posed. People want to see you having fun.
Play around with your phone and get to know it’s features.
Thanks to everyone for such good tips on taking Selfies–I am new at this and hopefully my pictures will greatly improve. Love the Art Skin Care System.
I don’t take selfies much as I have never thought I was very photogenic but with all these great tips I just may try it more with my sweet bully puppy, Daisy. One tip that has helped me is to keep from opening your eyes so wide. Make them a little more intense similar to what Tyra Banks does. I heard her talk about it on one of her shows, tried it & it has really helped on many of my photos.
Don’t forget to smile, but not too big & not too little. Make it a natural one.
Snap quick! Especially if you have kids, often those first few shots are the best because they get tired of posing and are ready to move on.
In addition to the other selfie tips, is to have a fairly consistent “look” to your photos. Whether it’s the way you compose your shots or the way you edit them, your photo will be known as yours!
I love the selfie speak mode on my LG G3 … set it up choose your selfie pose and without pushing a button you just say CHEESE!! The phone takes the pic for you with a speak of a word!
What you’re thinking is often captured in the photo. My pictures ALWAYS turn out the best when I’m feeling good in the moment! Either after just having a good laugh, thinking of something funny, or taking a second to remind myself that I am beautiful. It really comes through in the pic! So don’t paint on a smile- get in your happy place and capture that!
Love YL! Thanks for this awesome article! One tip, the person with the longest arms holds the phone. Also keep chin slightly down for a flattering no double chin!
ONLY take a selfie if there is someone else besides you in the picture. If you are taking a picture of the background – just take a picture (you can always look in the mirror if you want to see what you look like!!!).
I’d love to try this kit. I’m new to YL and totally in LOVE!!
Great ideas, selfies are hard for me to take.
This was very helpful!
I would love to get the Art system my selfie 😃
Sometimes having the light from a window behind you can produce cool lighting effects, kind of like a halo. Experimenting with the effects is fun and can prove very flattering.
Have fun, don’t always feel you need to be serious! Make funny faces, those can be some of the best selfless!
When you are my age, selfies are too up close and personal. I think I may need to purchase the Art skin care System and use it for a few months before I will be able to look good in a selfie. :-) Sure would like to win it…..
Be natural – be different – be creative !
Think of something really funny and smile with your eyes ! Try to be natural – be different ! Be creative !
Close-ups that aren’t full-face. My daughter takes these close-up, angled photos that show most, but not all of her face.
Love ’em!
I just need to practice! I like the tip about angles. Thanks!
Be sure to take your selfie at the beginning of your activity while you are still fresh and be sure to smile, happiness shines every time!
I actually love to record a video and then take a screen shot of a good one. This works out great especially when having kids! You’re bound to get everyone looking at the same time this way!
Have fun with your expressions!
Don’t forget to use your Thieves Aromabright toothpaste when you are smiling for all to see! There is no better toothpaste on earth for sparkling clean teeth and fantastic pictures!
Just have fun and be yourself while taking selfies
Great advise! I am not at all camera friendly so I rarely take selfies but will definitely try a few of these next time I do! :)
I don’t take too many selfies but these are all helpful tips! I would love to try the Art Skin Care System:)
Always try to look where the camera is and not at yourself on the screen. I hate it when my eyes are looking to the side!
Great tips! And excited about the opportunity to win the ART system … fingers crossed 😊
Enjoy,Enjoy,Enjoy Smile be natural, show your love and zest for life. And that should all come natural anvil from the heart. I tried the Art Skin Care System for the first time at a meeting this past weekend and I absolutely LOVE IT! It felt amazing! Good Luck to all!
My best tip is let the 15 yr old daughter take the family selfie! lol
Push your forehead out and down a little, don’t over do it. SMILE !!
lose the ducklips :)
I need a smarter phone so I can post my pics online after learning how to use the camera!
Another tip I use if it’s very sunny – or if I’m just having trouble catching my eyes open! – is to put on my sunglasses… And always have a big smile!
Be yourself :)
Just do it! I have been having dry skin problems so I haven’t posted any picture myself lately.
I have been making my own items but would love a chance to win the whole art skin care line 💗😊
Be yourself, remember you are amazing and have a wonderful story to tell through your picture.
Natural light is best. Face the light. Don’t take pictures with the light behind you. Shoot down (hold phone up higher and angle down). If it can bend, bend it. Shoulders point tow rads the camera, not straight on. Keep eyes open, and keep a natural smile. Cheese! I would love to try the ART skincare line! I love my oils and supplements, now it’s time to venture to skin care!
Be joyful and you will see happy in your selfies. Oxymoron : selfless people radiate joy.
If you stick your chin out when u take ur selfie it gets rid of any double chin. It looks funny at the time but looks great in pics! :)
Would love to try and win these products!! My selfie taking is horrible, might have to invest in a selfie stick. My main advice is to keep it natural.
Great tips for the perfect selfie – the only thing I would add is: wear an oil that makes you smile!
Keep snapping because…..”Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst.” Henri Cartier-Bresson
Great tips! I would add a tip about having flattering colors and fit of clothing on. Wear what makes you feel good, you’ll look good at the same time!
Lipstick ladies (L’Briante is a good choice). Hold camera above you and look up – at a bit of an angle and watch your chin placement – as well as make sure your neck is not over extended — AND the very best lighting is a bright, but cloudy day. This gives natural lighting and not harsh sun rays or shadows. However, early morning (just after sunrise) or about an hour before sunset, also makes for some spectacular lighting. This helps keep the skin from looking washed out. Make sure the sun is in front of you and not behind you anytime you use the sun for lighting.
Smile. Confidence makes any photograph brighter. When posting said photograph, use the law of thirds.
