In Partnership with Hope for Justice, the Young Living Foundation Continues to Fight against Human Trafficking
Lehi, Utah – July 25, 2018 – The D. Gary Young, Young Living Foundation raised more than $1 million to help end modern slavery in Africa during the Young Living Foundation’s Ride for a Reason, Foundation 5k and other activities at the Young Living Essential Oils 2018 International Grand Convention. All funds raised will go to support Hope for Justice, a nonprofit that exists to bring about the end of modern slavery by preventing exploitation, rescuing victims, restoring lives and reforming society. “D. Gary Young dedicated his life to improving the lives of all people; and through The D. Gary Young, Young Living Foundation, Young Living’s compassionate members have generously given to help some of the most isolated and vulnerable communities around the world,” said Jared Turner, president and chief operating officer of Young Living Essential Oils. “I want to thank our members, Scott and Brenda Schuler, who chose to do something larger than themselves by launching the Ride for a Reason fundraising campaign that brought the Young Living family together and assisted in raising over $1 million to support Hope for Justice and help rescue the victims of human trafficking.” Starting with Uganda, the Foundation will immediately fund three Hope for Justice Lighthouses, each of which will provide trauma care, medical services, education and vocational training, counselling, therapy and safe shelter to survivors from the day they are rescued from slavery to when they are reintegrated into a family centered environment. Each Lighthouse will provide 150 to 200 children who are victims of human trafficking with this type of restorative care and safety each year. The Foundation’s support in Uganda includes covering the costs to provide rescued children and vulnerable families with outreach services, counseling, prevention and child protection education, follow-up support and reintegration services. The Foundation will also use the funds to support an additional eight Hope for Justice Lighthouses around the world. “Human trafficking is one of the most devastating social issues of our time, with 24.9 million slaves in the world, more than half of whom are women and girls,” said Greg Larsen, executive director of The D. Gary Young, Young Living Foundation. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with such an incredible organization like Hope for Justice and continue to drive long-term change throughout the world.” In addition to the funds aiding programs in Africa through its partnership with Hope for Justice, the Foundation is already supporting efforts in Cambodia with the Shine Career School. The Shine Career School offers intensive high school tutoring and classes to girls who have been rescued from human trafficking. Through the Foundation’s financial support, the school is currently educating 60 girls and funded 9,712 hours of vocational training in 2017. Additionally, the Foundation also funds the current Lighthouse Assessment Center in Cambodia, which offers young girls who are rescued from human trafficking a six- to eight-week intensive program to address their trauma and assess their long-term needs.
