Clove was listed in Hildegard’s Medicine, a compilation of early German medicines by highly regarded Benedictine Herbalists, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). Native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, the clove tree is a tropical evergreen species that produces thousands of small, fragrant flower buds. These buds are harvested when they ripen to a deep red color, then dried and steam distilled to produce Clove essential oil. Healers in China and India have used clove buds since ancient times as part of their treatments. Eugenol, cloves principal constituent was used in the dental industry for years to numb gums.
