Outback Botanical Reserve and Distillery

DARWIN, AUSTRALIA

Partner Since 2007

Australia’s Northern Territory outback sets the stunning backdrop for this location’s Australian cypress pine trees. Drawing on ethnobotanical use in the aboriginal practices, the founder of the Outback Botanical Reserve stumbled upon a new, now patented method of distillation that resulted in our unique Blue Cypress essential oil. This oil’s many benefits are still being researched to this day.

LOOKING AFTER THE ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY

Following a devastating typhoon in 1974 that flattened the city of Darwin, Australians began looking to concrete and brick as a more resilient material, and the government abandoned the cypress forest reserves. The Outback Botanical Reserve and Distillery protects the trees by giving them a new use and a second life. They also educate the community by offering agricultural experiences to surrounding students.

While this partner is headquartered in Perth, the sandalwood plantations extend across Australia’s tropical northern outback. The Ord River Sandalwood Farm and Distillery developed its own seed orchards, which allows for continual improvement of the seed stock. This location uses a remarkable approach to producing and cultivating sandalwood trees with the industry’s highest quality, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.

LOOKING AFTER THE ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY

The Ord River Sandalwood Farm and Distillery recycled almost 7 million gallons of water in 2019 alone. On average, the farm recycles 5 million gallons a year, which equates to over 50 million gallons recycled over the past 10 years! For these efforts, the farm received the prestigious Champion Award from the Western Australia Water Corp.
